Situated on about 300 acres, the AM General off road course is the defining element that makes the H1 the ultimate off road vehicle. The H1 is the go anywhere, do anything truck. Whether it is used for rescue or recreation it is designed to perform. AM General has done what NO other vehicle manufacturer would dare to do......build a track to prove its worth. Extreme! Yes! Heart pounding! Yes! You must experience these trails once in your lifetime. The Mecca for Hummer owners is South Bend/Mishawaka. The instructors at the off road course are professionals, whether you are just running the trails or at the Hummer Driving Academy, you'll find these guys to be down to earth and they know what they are doing. After all, they are on the course 5 days a week. The instructors are John, Trevor, Pete, Chris, and Scott. They train everyday joes like us, and members of our Armed Services.
The average trail run had between 12 and 20 trucks in it, requiring that you do your part to keep the guy in front of you and behind you in your sights. One slip and the line split. The trail runs were 2 hours long and were one of three levels of difficulty. It gave the average Hummer owner the opportunity to really expand their skills and see what their truck can do. There were moguls, steep inclines and declines, bogs, water crossings, step climbs, and virtually any combination of obstacles you could think of. They did have some H1 only trails that were a blast. I love it any time I get the chance to push that truck....just one step further.
The trails have 3 different levels of difficulty:
1. Easy or what I'd call "Trail Rated"
2. Moderate to include some good obstacles and maneuvering.
3. Difficult. At times you have to choose your lines and the obstacles are more extreme. Also in level 3 trails I'd include winching trails. A tow strap is recommended in the event you're high centered or the holes become to slippery for stock tires. They also had a level 3 extreme that was even more challenging.
You can and will encounter just about any obstacle you would in real life if you were on an expedition, but here, the obstacles are one right after another. These guys work hard to maintain these trails and it requires constant grooming. They are always on the move blazing new trails with new challenges. You can find more information on the AM General Off road course and how we went about developing a course for the Illiana Hummer Club based on the AMG course.
Thanks guys for a great time on the Off Road Course!
